NATIVE LANDS.
LAWS NOT SATISFACTORY. VIEWS OF FARMERS’ CONGRESS.
WELLINGTON. July 27. The committee set up by the Dominion Conference of the Farmers Union to-day proposed the following remit: That the conference respectfully suggests (1) that the present position of the native land _ laws is unsatisfactory, both in the interests of natives and of the Dominion; (2) that the natives should be granted, as 'far as possible, the same rights and privileges to deal with their land as Europeans ; (3) that all native lands should he subject to the same land tax and county rating as European land, provided they have reasonably good road access; (4) that natives be granted the same facilities under all loan acts as Euro-: peans, so that they may* be able to develop and road their land; (5) that if, after the natives are granted, the privileges of Europeans, they fail to bring their land’into useful occupation, the Government should take power to acquire same under the Land for Settlement Act. Clause 2 was objected to. and finally defeated, and the remit was referred hack to the committee.—P.A. ''
