HAWKE CUP MATCH

POVERTY BAY TEAM SELECTED

GISBORNE MAY BE VISITED BY AUSTRALIAN TEAM.

A meeting of the Management Committee of the Poverty Bay Cricket Association was held last night, Mr H. E. Maude presiding. The following team w T as selected and approved by the committee to represent Poverty Bay in the Hawke Cup match against Wanganui on January 1, 3, and 4. L. McMahon (captain). H. Ellis. W. Blair. M. Guthrie. W. J. Scholium. S. Reeves. W. T. Drake. H. Forster. T. Pere. C. Temperton. F. Kahlenberg. Emergencies: J. H. Jones, J. H. Miller and R. Gartshore. Letters were received from the New Zealand Cricket Council stating that notification had not been received by the Council of the Cup match with Wanangui.—The chairman stated that, as soon as the dates had been decided upon, the Council had been notified, it was not necessary for them to advise the Council of a challenge until the dates had been agreed] upon. The Council advised that, as the Christchurch City and Ashburton Association had declined to affiliate with the Canterbury Cricket Association, they could not enter into competition for the Hawke Challenge Cup. Writing in connection with the proposed visit of an Australian team the Cricket Council stated that nothing definite had yet been arranged, hut the committee was assured that, if the visit should eventuate, an endeavour would be made to include Gisborne in the intinerary. It was considered that a guarantee of at least £IOO would be required. Some discussion resulted as to whether admission should be charged for the Hawke Cup match or whether a collection should he taken up. It was decided ultimately that a collection be taken up. Mr A. J. Gibson was appointed an j umpire. The question of a second umpire was left over until it was ascertained how many men were coming from Wanganui. The hours of play were fixed at 10. 30 a.m. to .0 p.m. subject to the aproval of the Wanganui team.

It is expected that the Wanganui team to contest the Hawke Cup will arrive in Gisborne by motor cal’ on December 31.

Members of the representative team will practise each evening this week.
