STEWARDS’ STRIKE BECOMING MORE SERIOUS. ;

WATERSIDERS MAY JOIN.

MOERAKI RACING AGAINST TIME.

‘United Press Association —Copyright.) SYDNEY, Dec., 20. The prospects of a settlement of the stewards’ strike are more slender. More steamers have been thrown idle, and trade along the coast is becoming paralysed. Some Union officials are of opinion that the Steamship Owners’ Federation will seize the opportunity for a trial of strength with certain maritime unions which have been harassing'them for months past.—U.P .A. The Riverina arrived at 12.45 p.m. The stewards’ strike is becoming more serious.

The owners are employing a strikebreaking crew on the steamer Marella.

It is now expected that the strike will spread to the wharf laborers. The strike has also spread to the inter-State cargo carriers. The stewards on two vessels at Newcastle, are giving notice. The Union Company is racing against time with the Moeraki, which is due to-night. If the vessel arrives in time there is a good chance of despatching her to Tasmania before the stewards’ notice expires. (Received Dec. 21, 1 a.m.) SYDNEY, Dec. 20. Arrived at 9 p.m..
