AXEMEN’S CARNIVAL AND CITY BAND.
(To the Editor.) Sir,—ln your issue of the 16th. msC, in a report of the committee of the above sports, some of the members waxed caustic, over the “exorbitant sum demanded by the Band, £ls 15s per day for playing: at the carnival at Christmas. .A band comprising 25 members playing at the above “exorbitant” rate would receive for the day’s work about 12s 7d each man. A laborer is worthy, of his hire, and I would ask the Carnival Committee 1 if they expect to hire the necessary labor to carry out their sports at a cheaper rate tban 13s 7d per day. The City Band have only themselves to blame, if in the past they have taken engagements too cheaply, so that sports.committees and others object to paying a fair remuneration for the Band’s services. The Conductor of the City Band is to be congratulated in insisting on a' full Tshnd attendance at engagements. The “circus band” stunt so favoured by those requiring the services of only a few players, required to “make a noise”, has always been a subject of adverse comment, by the many well wishers of the City Band. Thanking you for your valuable space. —I am, etc., “OLD PRO.”
