REQUEST BACKED BY SOME SOUTHERN PRODUCERS.

A request for the issue of a license to Armour and Company, Limited, ot Australasia, is made in a petition presented to Parliament to-day. The petition is signed by H. D. Acland, of Christchurch, and 107 others. The petition states that the petitioners, who are sheepfarmers, believe it to he in the interests of the meat producers of the Dominion that no unnecessary restrictions should he placed upon the sale of meat and that competition among buyers from abroad is to the advantage of the Dominion. They believe it 'to he to the advantage of the industry that tli is company should he permitted to purchase a fair proportion of produce in open competition. The license, they state, could he revoked if used to the detriment of the producers. They suggest further that all meatbuying firms should he required to send to tlie Department of Agriculture monthly returns of stock bought and frozen "with any other information required. These returns could be used to check the misuse of licenses. Armour and Company were refused a license on account of their alleged connection with the American'Meat Trust.—Special to Times.
