A SATURDAY NIGHT DISTURBANCE.

MAN CONVICTED ON THREE i CHARGES.

ONE MONTH FOR OSBCENE LANGUAGE. As a sequel to the disturbance which occurred m Gladstone Road on Saturday evening. Pester K Hudson appeared before Mr J. S. Barton, S.M., yesterday morning on charges of drunkenness, committing a breach of the peace, and using obscene language. Accused pleaded guilty to all charges. Sub-Inspector Cassells stated that at about 6.15 p.m. on Saturday evening, Constables Gribben and Campbell were passing a right-of-way in close proximity to the Albion Hotel, when their attention was attracted by a disturbance in which accused and another man were engaged. The police stopped to investigate the matter, and accused rushed over to Constable Gribben and challenged him to light. One ,of accused's mates offered to take Knudson . awv and the police moved away to give him an opportunity of doing so. Several minutes later the police returned .and Kndson again rushed up to Constable Gribben and wanted to fight. Seeing that it was useless to try and reas.pn with Knudson, Constables Campbell and Gribben proceeded to arrest him but only succeeded in doing so after being roughly handled by the mob. During the melee bottles and other missiles were thrown at the police. Sub-Inspector Cassells also stated that as a rule Knudson was a well-behaved man, but had apparently taken too much liquor which caused him to lose his head. On the charge of drunkenness accused was fined 10s and 2s costs, in default J 18 hours imprisonment. In respect of the charge of committing a breach of < Hie peace, he was lined £4 with 2s costs, in default 7 days imprisonment, and for using the obscene language was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment without the option of a fine: the sentences to lie cumulative.
