AMERICA CUP.

THE SECOND TEST

RESOLUTE CANNOT FINISH OWING TO BREEZE.

SHAMROCK A MILE AND A HALF ASTERN.

NEW YORK, July 17

Starting for the second race Resolute crossed the line at llir 64min 28see., Shamrock nine seconds later. The wind was very light and blowing in a south-east direction.

Beating to windward. Rfesolute was footing faster than Shamrock. At 2.15 p.m. the yachts were still heading for Long Island on the starhoard "tack.

Resolute increased her windward advantage on the third mile. Shamrock, trying to outfoot her, sagged to leeward, although forging ahead. At 2.30 p.m. the wind was freshening. A rolling sea troubled the Shamrock. At 2.55 Shamrock was four hundred yards ahead, but seven hundred yards to leeward. At 3 n.m. the two were tacking for the turn. Resolute was nearly a mile ahead. At 3.15 the wind freshened to six knots and the boats split tacks.

At 5.50 both were far out to sea, almost heading for the mark oil the }>ort side. Resolute was 400 yards ahead to windward, but Shamrock was gaining steadily. At 4.10 the mark was a mile to the weather side. Shamrock came 100 yards under its lee. The wind then’ dropped. The yachts, tacking to windward, failed to fetch the mark. The wind hauled to the southward. letting Resolute up. Shamrock was left astern, almost becalmed, a mile away, when Resolute turned the mark. Shamrock rounded tlie mark 1723 yards behind. At 5.15 Shamrock was five miles astern, nearly becalmed, while Resolute was going fairly fast under a new breeze from the south.

At 5.25 p.m. Resolute was five miles from the second mark. At 5.45 Shamrock was two miles astern.

Shamrock failed five times to pass the first mark owing to shifts and calms.

At- 6.30 p.m. Resolute was a mile off the second mark, and turned. At 7.1 p.m. she broke cut her big reaching jib topsail in an endeavor to finis.h under the time limit. Shamrock was a mile and a half astern. Resolute was fifteen minutes in sailing half a mile on a two to threeknot breeze, found it impossible to finish.—A. and N.Z.C.A. Correction: In the yacht race the first mark was turned by Resolute at 4hrs 33mins 42secs. and the Shamrock at shrs lOmius os£cs. —A. and N.Z.C.A.

ADVERSE CRITICISM ON SHAMROCK’S HANDLING.

ANOTHER SKIPPER WILL PROBABLY REPLACE BURTON.

(Received July 19. 9.30 p.m) NEW YORK, July 19

Burton will give place to another skipper for the Shamrock. This was decided upon after a series of conferences between Sir Thomas Lipton. Captain H. L. Garrett, the Royal Ulster Chib’s representative, Mr. Charles Nicholson, designer of the Shamrock, and Colonel Duncan F. Neill. Sir Thomas Lipton’s personal representative. It is probable that Colonel Neill or Mr. Nicholson will command the vessel in the next ray 1 * on Tuesday. There is much criticism as M the way in which she was handled. The widespread opinion is that the Sluimroeck was not sailed in a- way to show her best ability. The climax came, on Saturday when tlie ship lost much ground because of changes in her headsails. The Resolute’s skipper, Mr. Charles Adams, outmanoeuvred Captain Burton in both races. —A. and N.Z.C.A.
