the MAYOR'S TROPHIES
The races for the trophies presented by the Mayor were continued last evening A. Drummond defeating J. Lloyd, and L. Winter defeating E. McGuffie. The race between Drummond and Lloyd was a good contest. Lloyd had slightly the better of the start. At the Derby Street bridge the boats were even, hut passing the rowing sheds Drummond had forged a little ahead Going through Peel Street bridge Lloyd with the inside of the bend in his favor came up level, hut Drummond with his extra weight went away again, and passed the post with half a length to spare , , J The second heat, between Winter and j McGuffie, was even more close than the j first Both crews got off tho mark well and stayed together to the rowing sheds where Winter started to gain a margin, and at the Peel Street bridge was a canvas in the lead. Down the home straight both crews opened np for their final effort, and McGuffie drew level about four lengths from the post An exciting finish resulted, Winter getting the verdict by a short six feet. The rowing was splendid thoughout the race, and McGuffie’s light crew are to he congratulated on their gameness. The coxswains steered very well in all the events, and certainly assisted to a big extent in making the races such a decided success. The draw to-night will he Patty v. Walters, L. Sticbbury v. O. Hansen, and C. Sheen v. J. Johnson. This will finish the first round.
