UAWA COUNTY COUNCIL.

An ordinary and special meeting of the Uawa County Council was held on Saturday; present; The chairman (Cr. E. B. Boland), and Crs. D. H. Hawkins. J. A. Moore, J. S. Paterson, J, McNeil, F. Hutchinson, and C. E. Smith.

The Secretary Cook Hospital and Charitable Aid Board wrote, asking the Council to forward the first instalment of the 1919 levy, also to have the last instalment paid before 31t January. 1912. —It was resolved to comply with the request. The Clerk of the Wniapu County Council wrote, conveying congratulations from his Council to the Uawa County Council, in connection with the formation of the new County.— The letter was received. The Returned Soldiers’ Association, Gisborne, wrote, thanking the Council for appointing a returned soldier as clerk, and hopifig that the returned soldier applications would be successful in the appointment of engineer-overseer.—The letter was received.

Messrs Rees, Bright, and. Waucliop wrote, stating that the draft Bill for constitution cf a harbor disrict comprising the Uawa County, had been prepared.—The letter was received. A letter was read from Minister for Native Affairs, acknowledging receipt of letter asking to have the powers of the Native Council with regard to dog registration conferred upon the Council and promising consideration.—The letter was received.

The acting Under-Secretary wrote, asking the Council to state if they desired any amounts placed on the estimates for grant purposes. It was decided to apply, for the following grants; —Mangakino bridge, £4OO. £ for £ ; forming Dixon’s cutting, free grant, £500; formation and grading Dunlop’s to Caldwell’s, Tologa-Tauwhareparae road, £250, £ for £; Caldwell’s bridge, TologaTauwhareparae road, £IOO, £ for £; widening and improving Tologa Hall, £3OO, £ for £: metalling TologaWigan road, £2OO. £ for £; Wigan bridge, Tologa-Wigan road, £IOOO, £ for £2.

The Clerk to the Cook County Council wrote, stating that his Council had agreed to the request of the Uawa County to have the Cook County Overseerls supervision for the new East Coast road (that portion which is in the Uawa County (until such time as the work now in hand is completed-; also arranging for a meeting between the two counties with a view to adjustments. The chairman reported that +’’p meeting between the two counties had been held, and that satisfactory arrangements had been made. The Clerk of the Cook County Council forwarded copy of a claim by the Waikoliu County Council for a proportion of rates collected with respect to Mr F. Hall’s Hokoroa property.—The Clerk was instructed to place the amount on the list of payment for August meeting. The Secretary of the New Zealand Counties’ Association wrote, asking the County to consider the matter of affiliation. —On t-lie -motion ot ( the Chairman, seconded bv Mr C. The Gisborne agent.of the Government Insurance Department wrote, asking that on the expiry of the present accident insurances liis company be given the County’s accident risks.—lt was decided that the letter should lie on the table at present. Mr A. J. J. Hawkins seconded the motion, which was carried Cr. Smith then brought forward the following motion, according , to notice; “That this Council. consider the matter of rating on unimproved values throughout the County. The motion was seconded by tne Chairman, and after discussion, was carried, Cr. McNeil dissenting. At this stage the acting overseer, Mr H. W. Langlands. attended the meeting. He was instructed to see to the carrying out of breastworks the bridge near McCreedy s turn oft. The matter of a water trough at the Sheen farmers’ Co-operative Co. s corner was discussed, and the Chairman and Crs.
