POVERTY BAY TURF CLUB’S MEETING.

MASTER INEY" WINS BIG EVENT

The first autumn meeting of the Poverty Bay Turf Club was held on the Makaraka racecourse on Saturday. The meeting is due to the restoration of the day cut out by the Government, which necessitated only a one-day meeting in February instead of the two usually held by the club. The weather was fine, though one slight shower fell during 'the day. The course was still very dry. fast times being again registered. The attendance of the public was good, and the totalisator investments amounted to the satisfactory sum of £20,734. During the dav several exciting finishes were witnessed, notably in the Shorts Handicap, Carlvsian by a short head in front of Sheila and Tieki, who were level for second place. The judging in the hands of Mr. R. B. Lusk as usual give every satisfaction, anti the secretary, Mr. D. deCosta, had had every arrangement necessary for the comfort and convenience of patrons. The City Band played selections during the afternoon. Following are the results:

Restiveness on the mart of the horses delayed the start. Happy Valley was in particularly unsettled mood, and after playing up on several occasions dislodged Deeley. At length a good start was secured. Marula and Happy Valley were first out and led the field by two clear lengths with Orawia following. Turning into the straight Orawia moved up and going on won easily by three lengths, Marula beating Happy Valley by half a length for second place, Kohinahina being fourth. Puna Rakau fifth and Thebes last. Time, 1.16 1-5.

After a false start the field was despatched in good order, and soon Aurore showed out, with Brunswick next. These two took the first hurdle together, closely followed by the field with Diavolo in the lead. Passing the stand Diavolo had displaced Brunswick and was close behind Aurore. Aurore dropped back, leaving Diavolo and Brunswick to carry on tlie running. The order was mamtained for some distance. Then Aurore came near the leaders again and was soon racing in the lead with Brunswick , with Con close up. Coming to the last hurdle Aurore lead, and Con and Brunswick were racing abreast, but Rangi Thompson pushed his horse through on the rails and won by half a length, Con two lengths further back. Diavolo fourth and Lord Ainslie last, lime, 2.50.

A good start saw Sheila assume the lead, closely folowed by Carlysian and Aire, Marenga being last. At tlie home bend Tieki ran into second place and the three horses, Carlysian, Sheila and Tieki entered the straight almost together. A great race for home ensued, the three horses being level. Little change was made as the winning post was reached. Carlysian being placed first by a very short neck, while Tieki and Sheila ran a dead-heat for second position. Time, 1.3.

A great race up the straight ensued between Multive, Cynic, Master Iney and Hy thread, Master Iney winning by half a length from Multive, Cynic two lengths away third, Hy thread being fourth, Grand Idea Grand Idea fifth and Ehiepa sixth, with Cleft last. Coming into the straight Fiddlestring and Demonstrate were in front with Glengyle close up, and this order was maintained till the winning post, Fiddlestring coming first by one length from Demonstrate, with Glengyle one and a half 'lengths behind. Multifual started last. Sheila and C'arlysian were soon in the lead, and joined by Orawia, carried on the running. Then Sea Lord came up and Multifual commenced to make up lost ground. Entering the straight the field was in close order, and Carlysian on the rails and Black Lace on the outside both passed Sheila and Orawia, and coming on fought out a good finish. Black Lace winning by a short head. Multifual put in a great run and beat Orawia by two and a half lengths for third place. Time, 1.16 2-5.

After a , good start Bjorneborg soon , showed up, followed by Crosswords, ' Orateau and Ohoreka. In the back bend Secret Code joined Bjorneborg and Grand Idea also moved forward, . Blackall being last. In the back stretch the field closed up and coming down the straight Ohoreka was .in front. At half distance Tavistock joined the leader and a desperate race for home ensued, ending in a win for Ohoreka by a nose. Black-: all put in a great run for third place, being two lengths behind. Actifid got away badly. Downham ! and Astropbel first showed out, but Actifid came with a run and soon was in second place. Coming into the straight Actifid was almost level with) Downham. The effort was too much' and when the prussure was applied she had to give way to Astrophel, . who made a strong effort to catch j Downham, but was unable to do so, the latter winning by a length, Actifid two lengths further hack, and Goldenlyte last.
