OBITUARY.
MR ROBERT HARPER. The death occurred at Gisborne yesterday of Mr Robert Harper, of Kaiti a well-known resident 'of Gisborne. Mr Harper was bofn at Monaghan, Ireland, and came out to Auckland a little over thirty years ago After a brief residence at Auckland he moved to Gisborne, where li© entered into partnership with the late Mr William Pettie, establishing the business now carried on by Messrs Wm. Pettie and Co. Mr Harper subsequently entered into business, for a time, on his own account. Although he had, been ailing for some time his death came as a shock, and much sympathy will be extended to his widow and onlv son, Mr Eric Harper. Mr Harper’s father, together with a brother and several sisters, are resident in Ireland, the former being over ninety years of age. Prior to leaving for the colonies the late Mr Harper was working with his brother in a large warehouse establishment at Monaghan. Although offered a partnership in the business, he decided to come - out
to the colonies. For many years Mr Harper was a prominent figure in . racing circles, and among of the more familiar of the stud he owned were Donald McKinnon (winner of the Christchurch Cup for two years in succession), Three. Star, Charcoal, Monarco, Pinipinitikura, Pipiwharauroa (afterwards purchased by Mr Murphy and sent to England), and Stepper (subsequently sent to India). Although retired from business for the last twelve or thirteen years. MiHarper was well-known locally, more especially by the earlier residents. The interment will take place at Makaraka cemetery this afternoon.
