COUNCIL OF EDUCATION.
MEETING YESTERDAY. (Press Association Telegram.) WELLINGTON, June 25. The newly-elected Council of Education held its first sitting to-day. The Director of Education presided and gave an exhaustive address, in which he replied to recent criticism. He claimed that the progress made by the Department proved that the authorities had not been indifferent to New Zealand’s needs- The proportion of pupils to teachers had been reduced during recent years. The figures would have been better if the Department had been able to obtain the extra teachers required. The Minister for Education addressed the gathering and 6aid the shortage of teachers was due to lack of supply, not the unwillingness of the Department to engage the number necessarv for efficiency. The Council’s deliberations were not open to the press.
