TRAM SMASH IN WELLINGTON.
CAR JUMPS THE RAILS. Press Association Telegram. WELLINGTON. June 24. A double-decker tramcar left the rails at the junction of Lambton Quay and Featherston Street this evening when travelling at' a fairly high speed and dashed towards the footpath. The motorman applied the brakes,, but failed to .stop the car until to struck tlie kerb and smashed two iron verandah > posts and considerable damaged the verandah. Fortunately the car contained few passengers, but all were thrown from their seats. Two ladies were carried to the Central Hotel and medically attended to. One of them, Mrs. O’Leary, was found to have a broken leg and tlie other was severely shaken, hut was able to go home. The motorman, who stuck to his post, was uninjured. The car was less damaged than might have been expected. There was no apparent cause for its leaving the rails. *
