GOVERNMENT TOWN PLANNER.
NEW DEPARTMENT IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA.
During the past two years the Government of South Australia has.had attached to its Civil Service an expert in town-planning and housing. The Attorney-General, the Hon. H. N. Banvell, announced recently that the Government had decided to maintain town-planning as a separate and permanent department of the State under his direction, and ias a prelimlinary the services of Mr. Charles C. Reade (who organised and carried through the Australasian town-plann-ing tour in 1914 and 1915 on behalf of the Garden Cities and Town-plan-ning Association of Great Britain) have been engaged. 1 for a further term of two years as Government Town-Pianner. Mr. Read'o will be an officer of the first class in the professional division of the public service. 'The adoption of ,a definite and continuous town-planning policy by the Government in South Australia should not be without its influence on other States, especially in view of the Second Australian Official Town Planning Conference and Exhibition which has been organised under the patronage of the State Government of. Australia and will be opened in Brisbane on July 30 next.
