FORTNIGHTLY MEETING

The fortnightly meeting' of the Borough Council was held last evening. Present: • His Worship the Mayor (Mr W. G. Sherratt), and Councillors Wauchop, Mouat, Ball, Oman, Wildish, Miller, and Thicker. The secretai'v to. the Harbor Board wrote stating that the approaches to the weigli-bridge had now been attended to and drawing attention to the need for some improvement to the roadway from the weigli-bridge to the end of'Read’s Quay.—Received. Mr Hei, solicitor, wrote stating that Mr Thomas Tasker was not . The owner or occupier ox Lot /o, i/o-iooiv Bay ley Street, and had been wrongfully rate<t for this property for six years. He asked that m .lustice to Mr Tasker a refund be niade or ail moneys pad by mistake, especially as Mr Tasker was at present doing Ins bit for liis country.—-Referred to. the Finance Committe with a recommendation that relief be given if possible. ~ , „ Miss F. Hornm?.n write on behalf of the girl’s branch of the School Sports Association, expressing appreciation of the courtesy and consideration shown by the Council in allowing them to have basket-ball competitions on tlie reserve, liieasurino- the courts, and supplying the necessary material. The competitions would proceed forthwith and the members would be pleased ta niec any of tlie Councillors who might find it convenient to attend. Receivec . Mr W. J. McCliskie, chairman of the ' Gisborne North School Committee wrote stating that it uas intended to have the school connected with the town water supply and asked for a reduction in the charge for connecting with the niam.—The_ Mayot said the charge was £3 10s for the connection and £4 for the metei. This was the lowest net cost and it -would be imposbble to reduce itHe would move that- the Mangapapa School Committee be informed to that eff Mr M E., Walker, local agent for the-Government Life Insurance Office, applied for the Council s employees liability accident insurance on the expirv of the present cover.—Referred on the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr Wildish' to the Works committee for a report. . A letter re additional work m connection with his contract was received from Mr Walker and additional payment asked" for.—Referred to the engineer. The Railway Department wrote stating that the Council’s application for a further strip of land along the Waikanae Beach at a pepper-corn rental would receive attention.—Referred to the Beautifying Association. A letter was received from the Christchurch City Council stating that an attempt to have tickets for theatrical entertainments numbered so as to correspond with numbers for seats had proved, impracticable. —Tlie Mayor said the Council should go on and try and frame a -satisfactory by-law.—The Town Clerk said lie was now engaged in preparing a bylaw. —-The Mayor’s suggestion was agreed to. A letter was received on behalt of Mr Coop with regard to the Council’s proposal to take land for the purposes of a reservoir.—Deferred sine die. Ci- Munns moved that the engineer be given three months to prepare a full report upon the reservoir question.—This was carried. Mr Tonevcliffe wrote at length complaining about the bad state of mally of the footpaths in bis part of the town. —Referred to tlie Works committee. Dr -Reeve wrote asking for permission to connect a cottage just outside the Borough boundary, at the end of Sievwright Lane, with the Borough sewerage. —The May<sl- moved than the apiication be referred to the engineer and the Sanitary committee. The motion was carried. . Mr Bull and others wrote thanking the Council for work done to the footpath along the Kaiti beach and asking that it be extended to Scott s Hill—Referred to the Yorks committee.
