THE FIFTH ARMY.
FRENCH WRITER’S TRIBUTE
The correspondent of the Paris Matin on the British front m a narrative of operations conducted by the Am } under General Gough, writes: “In retracing stage by stage the ibitter pilgrimages of retreat over tlie road of sacrifice where the Fifth British Army fought, I feel that. I am •at the same time accomplishing the histographer’s work of correcting erroneous impressions. “I could wish that this brief recital of events would contribute its lrumblo share in removing the unjust discredit that might seem to have been focussed on the Army, which, under the fearful shock of onslaught, held out in the very end, and performed its •task in offering its stoical resistance for the common safety and honour. “The memory of* the dead soldiers cries out for the vindication of the glorious part they played.”
