A pleasant social afternoon was spent, at The Women’s Club, recently, with music, song, ».and competition. Al'ternpon tea was kindly provided by Mrs T. Preston and Mrs Pullett. The proverb competition organised by Mrs W. A. Smith was keenly contested. The successful competitors were Mi’s J. D. Smith, Mrs Herbert deOosta and Miss A. McKenzie. The .prizes, which were much admired, were kindly donates by Mrs J. Pike and Mrs Hood. Mrs J. D. Smith and Mrs Drake gave much pleasure with their musical items. Roses and flowering shrubs were ’effectively arranged in the reception room.: An opportunity was taken during the proceedings to welcome the new president, Mis Outhbert. The Club ha’ve fortnightly sewing meetings, ail'dtheir ' intention is to sew for the French War Orphans. The Club would be greteful for gifts of money or material from any one desirous of helping them in their good work. Mrs T. A. Crawford is the organiser Of the sewiiig meetings. T Mr Harold Gregson and Mr J. 1 ( • Montague, of Auckland-, have been appointed judges of music and elocution respectively at the Wellington competitions, to be held, in November. ‘ Mrs Porteous and her children, who have been visiting in Greymonth, have returned to Opotiki.

Mr and Mrs W. Busby are at present staying at the Masonic Hotel. Mr and Mrs J. W. Nolan have returned from a visit to Auckland. Mrs Rov Crawford lias returned from Devonport. Auckland. Mr ‘and Mrs J. B. Kellb have returned from the south. -Mr and Mrs Walter Barker have returned from a visit- to Taupo. Mr and Mrs Isaac Bayley, of - New Plymouth, are visiting in Gisborne. Colonel Porter and Mrs ;} Porter are visiting in Gisborne. Mrs A. L. Reeve gave an enjoyable evening party for .young people last Tuesday. A-very amusing competition was entered into with zest, the success of the competitors depending on their powers of observation and ability to move about quickly. Songs, and recitations were given during a pleasant interval. Mrs Starkey was the guest of honor.

DANCES

A dance in honor of returned soldiers v-as given by Miss G. Redstone in Redstone’s Hall last Wednesday. The floor was in good condition tor dancing, and the dances _ were many and varied. Dance music AA'as capably supplied by Mrs" Thompson and Mr’ Uridge. Supper Avas very attractively laid out in a special supper rooni, Avhile the pretty floral decorations were much admired. Jellies, trifles fruit-salads <md all the good Brucej Bousefield, C-hrisp (2). Tantice to. Miss Redstone received the guests in a dainty rose pink lioclv, prettily fashioned. * Amongst those present, besides the soldiers and nuises from the Public Hospital - and Lister Hospital were : —Mrs J. Jones, .Orr, McClaurin (2), Minnot. * During the evening games of cards Avere keenly contested bv the non-dancers. Songs Avere given bv Miss Bruce and Mr Luttrell during a pleasant internal. A fareAvell dance Avas tendered Messrs D H- Dawson and M. MacKinnon at the Abercorn Hall on Saturday last, in honor cf their entering the ’ Sockhurn Flying School. A large number of friends of the of honor were present. Splendid dance music was supplied by Mrs Thompson. Avliilst Mrs M. L. GREAT DAY IN MELBOURNE

On Empire Bay, May 24 the publie were given a wonderful oppoitunity to show practical appreciation of the work of the Australian Red Cross Society. A notable feature of the day was' the cafe inside the Town Hall, representing the co-oper-ation of New .Zealand residents in Melbourne.. The Dominion’s official representative (Mr H. J•. Manson) had taken an active part m the organising. The vestibule entrance wais approached through a handsome archway, simulating a Maori dwel-ling-place, and at either side were trees and palms typical of New Zealand; ' - : '• ' -
