The voice of the British sergeantmajor has won a reputation for that autocratic individual, and thereon hangs an amusing little story which was narrated by Mr Varney in the course of his lecture on Wednesday evening. An officer was describing to the speaker a review of some troops which possessed a number of animals as mascots. One of these mascots gave a couple of gruff barks, “and, would you believe it,” the officer said, “the soldiers formed fours.” The joke was greatly appreciated by the audience.
