FURTHER APPRECIATIVE
REMARKS
Further appreciative remarks as to his worth and usefulness on local bodies of which lie was a member were made respecting the late Mr. James Brown by members of local bodies which met yesterday. DEFENCE COMMITTEE. Before business was commenced at the special meeting of the Defence Committee yesterday afternoon, the Chairman, Mr. W. G. Sherratt, referred to the death of Mr. Brown. He said he was one of the original members of the Committee, and had done a great deal of valuable work on the Claims Committee. He moved that a letter of sympathy from the Committee be sent to his widow and family. In seconding the motion, Mr. J. W. Bright said that Mr. Brown was a member of the Committee when he (the speaker) was Chairman, and lm had 'carried out his duties enthusiastically and well. No member had done more better work for the Committee than Mr. Brown. Mr. It. M. Birrcll said he had been closely associated with Mr. Brown, and his services to the Committee were invaluable. He was an energetic worker, and gave all the assistance possible. He was fearless and in every respect a man of great ability;"lie was one the community could ill afford to lose, and it could be said of him that ho left the world a little better than ho found it. The motion was carried in silence.
REFERENCE AT BOROUGH 'COUNCIL. When the Borough Council met last evening, tlie Mayor referred to the loss sustained by the Council by the death of Cr. Brown. He said lie was the oldest Councillor, and was a Councillor when meetings were held in the Gisborne Shcepfarmers’ Office. Cr. Brown was a member of the Harbor Board, Fire Board and Citizens’ Defence Committee as well, and his practical knowledge would be greatly missed in dealing with matters in connection with those bodies. He was a fearless man, and always had the courage of. his convictions. As a Councillor he had done excellent service to the Borough. His Worship moved a vote of sympathy with tlie widow and family.
Cr. Hill, in seconding the motion, expressed sincere regret at the death of Cr. Brown, who was a man of upright character and one who would hold to what be thought right. The motion was carried in silence, all members standing.
