OBITUARY.

MR. R, H. IMAGE. Quite a gloom was cast over the district- yesterday by the death of Mr. Reginald Henry Image, of Matawhero, which took place at a- private hospital in Gisborne in the morning. The late Mr Image had suffered with a heart affection for some years, and an aggravation of tins trouble necessitated liis undergoing treatment at the hospital, which he entered about three weeks ago. He made excellent progress, and on Monday afternoon was regarded by liis friends as being on the high road to recovery, but suffered a relapse on Monday night and died, as stated, yesterday morning with painful suddenness. The late Mr. Image was a very wellknown and highly-respected settler, and the deepest sympathy is expressed with his daughters in their sad loss. He was born in 1861 at Barbadoes, West- Indies, and was educated in England. He came to New Zealand when 18 years of age and settled in Poverty Bay, his uncle, the late Mr. J. Woodbine Johnson, engaging him as a cadet to learn sheepfarming. He remained with his uncle till the latter’s death in 1899, and then paid a short visit to the Homeland. He returned in November, 1900, and established his well-known store at Matawhero, where he formed a very large circle of friends, who esteemed 1 him for his upright character and warm-hearted-disposition. He always had the affairs of his district and of Poverty Bay in general at heart, and was regarded as one of the pillars of the district. He took a keen interest in Church matters, and was Vicar’s warden on the vestry of Waerenga-a-hika Church of England from the foundation of the parish some ten years ago. It may be remarked that the parish in the course of a few days has lost two of its wardens in the persons of tlie late Mr. Chas. Gray and Mr. Image. The late Mr. Image came of fighting stock, and one of his most cherished pcssessions was the Cross of the Legion of Honor, which was won by his father in the Crimea. Mr. Image married in 1893 a daughter of the late Mr. W. Dixon, of Alt. Stewart, County Tyrone, who predeceased him some years ago. There are three daughters of the ’marriage—Mrs. R. Ambridge, of Christchurch, and Misses Eileen and Phyllis Image, of Matawhero.

The interment will take placo at Makaraka to-day. HON. A. T. MAGINNITY. Press Association Telegram. NELSON, March 12. Obituary: The Hon. A. T.
