WAR TROPHY.
PRESENTED TO GISBORNE
GERMAN MACHINE GUN
“On behalf of Ist Battalion, Wellington Battalion, I wish to present to the citizens of Gisborne a German machine gun (light). No. 357, with mounting, as a war trophy,.!’ wrote Lieut.-Colonel Cook, commanding the battalion, in a letter which came before the Borough Council last evening. The letter was dateci "October 12, 1917.
“This gun was captured by 9th Hawke’s Bay Company during the third battle of Ypres on 4th October, 1917,” he continued. “The gun is now in the hands of the Arm v Ordnance Services and application has been made to despatch it to you. It is not expected, however, that this trophy will be forwarded until the termination of the present war ” The Council accepted the offer with thanks, and decided to reply that the gun would be gladly received when it was available.
