WAIPIRO BAY

tfrom Our Own Correspondent.) WAIPIRO BAY,. Dec. 30

The Christmas season passed over very quietly, and the weather has been good. " The local places of business report record business, —“last year was a record but this year heats it hands down,” says a business man.

On Christmas Eve a dance organised by Mesdames Tamepo, Matehe, Parata, Tokara and Hurumanu was instrumental in augmenting the Wounded Soldiers' Fund by the sum of about £SO.

Mr J. F. Pettie lias purchased the sheep run at Pukeamaru, Te Ara-roa, the property of Messrs Barclay and Q’Loughlin. It is reported in the village that Messrs Iliki Parata, Hoera Potaka, Hirini Potaka, Wi Kanoa, Aporo Hikitapua. and Huka Kamatua ' have disposed of Takapau land to the Government Maori Land Purchaser. .. AL, so that over half of the Tawhiti Block has,Oiefin shld. It is to be hoped yjiat-./these properties will speedily for settlement. ' During-vthe' “big blow” on the 17tli inst. the big latgich owned by Koroniria Te Ana was anchored in Orange Bay preparatory to being towed away for repairs. Some excitement was felt in the township when it was rumoured that two Natives, Hiki Parata and Paora Tewara were aboard and that they had no means of communication with the shore —and a very big sea was running. A long coil of rope was procured and a small party set off on foot, a good two miles, it being too high tide to ride, to effect a res-_ cue. On arrival at the top of a cliff overlooking the place where the launch lay the party was just in time to see Hiki, Paul and another rowing quietly ashore in a dinghy on a placid sea. It appears that a third person was of the crew and came ashore to boil the billy for a meal when Hiki lifted tlie anchor to let tlie launch drift ,o'ut a little further from the shore. On looking round and seeing the boat moving the man ashore immediately jumped to the conclusion she was dragging her anchor and rushed to tlie township to give the alarm —hence the ‘pother.’ In the meantime another Native, who happened along, rowed tlie dinghy out to the launch.
