PERSONAL NOTES.
The death occurred at Napier on Friday of Mr. J. H. Sheath, a very prominent public man, who was chairman of the Hawke’s Bay Education Board and recently toured this district in that capacity. The funeral took place on Sunday, and was one of the largest and most impressive that has been seen in Napier for many years. At tlie Napier Cathedral hundreds attended the special service, and after that a long line of motors and traps followed the' coffin to the cemetery. The unusual crowd whiei was present testified to the esteem in which the late * Mr. Sheath was held. _ Mrs. H. T. Rawnsley, of Patutahi, is a daughter of the deceased gentleman.
Eighteen applications were received by the Borough Council for the position of Sanitary Inspector. The applications were narrowed down to three which were considered in committee last evening. Mr J. M. Swain of the plumbing and tinsmithing firm of Messrs Martin and Swain, was finally appointed to the vacant position.
Mi- A. Slinger. the new Borough engineer, attended the meeting of the Borough'Council last evening and was welcomed by the Deputy-Mayor on behalf of the Council.
A vote of thanks was accorded to Professor Kirk for his efforts m connection with the Fly Campaign, by the Borough Council last evening.
Private F Goldsmith, son of Mr E S. Goldsmith of Whitaker,street, was killed in action on October. Private Goldsmith was a member of the I2tli reinforcements ancH had been in France for over 12 months. 1 nor to enlistment, Private Goldsmith uas engaged in farm work at Te Araioa.
Mr Williamson, who was formerly for some time on the Borough mech■lnirnl staff has returned to tins district to take charge of the Motuhora stone quarries. _ -
