PEEL STREET TAXI STAND.

DRIVERS NOT SATISFIED WITH

CHANCE

COUNCIL TAKES NO ACTION,

A letter signed by eleven taxi drivers \was received at the Borough Council meeting last evening, stating that they found the new arrangement for the taxi stand, as suggested by the Council, was unsatisfactory and dangerous to the public. They asked that the Works Committee visit the stand and see the new system in operation. They suggested that if bylaw 5 was amended for Hannah’s corner the position would be settled. The following letter was read from the Poverty Bav Motor Association: —Complaints have been made by members of the unsatisfactory position of taxi cars at Hannah’s corners. When drivers back their cars out it is necessary for them to go into Gladstone Road, consequently an accident may easily happen to pedestrians crossing Peel Street; also it is difficult for the driver of the car when hacking into position to avoid collision with another car if the hood is up. When turning to go into Gladstone Road traffic is also blocked. The committee went thoroughly into the matter, and feel that, although not in accordance with the by-law, the old way of facing Gladstone Road is far safer. The Association suggested that the first car should be one verandah post back. This would allow the driver plenty of room to swing round : also it would give him the position of facing his probable clients. The letter added that the system was working satisfactorily in Auckland and Napier. Or. Munns moved that the matter be referred back'to the Works Committee. He thought that the taxidrivers would lose bv the change. He believed that under the new system there was just as much risk as ih the old system. He thought that the least the Works Committee could do was to see the new system m operation. , . . Cr. Ball seconded. He thought that the police should be consulted. Cr. Wauchop moved as an amendment that the letters he received. Cr. Hill said that to his wav of thinking the old system was the best and lie'was sure that there would be an accident if the system was not altered. ' , Cr. Tucker? seconded the amendment. . Other Councillors pointed out the taxi-cars were not required to back .out. . , . r The amendment was carried by o to 3. At the conclusion of the meeting Cr. Mouat gave notice, of motion to revise the by-law. dealing with the matter, allowing the cars to face towards Gladstone Road.
