DIVISION NEARING EXHAUSTION.

WELLINGTON, June 6. The number of names drawn in the Eighth Ballot was 7545, hut about 500 names were withdrawn in process of checking owing to the discovery that the men concerned were already members of the Expeditionary Force or dead. The withdrawn names are published in a separate list at the end of the Gazette, so that the whole 7545 men may be accounted for, and there is no room for suspicion of unfairness. The withdrawals mean a 1-eduction of nearly 6 per cent, of the number of reservists from whom the recruits required are to bo obtained after the Medical and Military Service Boards have done their work. This wastage is one of the factors to be reckoned with by the recruiting authorities in connection with tile •ballots. Nearly 44,000 members of the First Division have been drawn in the ballots, and the division has been depleted at the same time by voluntary enlistment, and contains not more than between 30,000 and 31,000 names at the present time. Remaining men of the First Division should understand that their turns are bound to come within the next four months, since the Division will be exhausted Jn that period. At the present rate of drawing, and the voluntary recruits now being taken, the 33rd Reinforcements—the last of the Division—are due to mobilise in September. ' .
