MAKAURT. , There was' a large attendance at the annual meeting of householders held j at Makauri, Mr. W. Shanks presided. j Tlie Committee’s annual report and e balance-sheet was read and adopted, \ and a very satisfactory financial position was disclosed. R. J. Witters, C. McGaviston, and W. Shanks, Mesdames W.Shanks and F. Sharp. Mr. Goodehap was elected chairman and Mr. Mortleman secretary. This is the first time that ladies have been elected to the Committee. i A vote of thanks was accorded to the retiring Committee. j WAIROA. \ The School Committee election at Wairoa was as usual marked with extreme apathy (states a Press Association message). The outgoing committee was re-elected with two new members. The retiring chairman (Mr" J MacDonald) and the secretary (Mr W. Taylor) were re-elected. WAEREN G A-A-HIKA. The meeting of householders was very sparsely attended, which indicates the satisfaction with which the school is conducted. The balancesheet, which was adopted, showed a credit of £9 7s 3d. Tlie following Committee was duly elected: Messrs. H. J. Lougher, Geo. Lister, A. L. Warrington, A. T. Rignev, and E. McKenzie. The meeting decided to express its dissatisfaction with the action of the Education Board in directing that the inspector’s report on the school was not to be published. Air. Lougher was re-elected chairman and secretary for the ensuing year and Air. A. T. Rignev treasurer. The report of the outgoing Committee. which was presented by tlie chairman. Air. Lougher, was as follows:—“Your Committee report as follows: Nine meetings were held during our term of office, which commenced on Alay 22, 1916. A stock of firewood was obtained bv chopping all large trees about the school grounds. This w.ork served the double purpose of letting in light and sunshine to the playgrounds. All firewood lias been cut into suitable lengths for burning in the school fireplaces. Weeds and excessive growth was cut during the summer vacation, and the grounds put in order for resumption of school work. The prounds, surrounding fences, and hedges are in good order, having recently been attended to. The sum of £5 was voted bv your Committee to purchase books for addition to the school library, Aliss Grigor kindly undertaking to select the books while on vacation. A number of very useful and interesting works (80 in all) have been added, and much appreciated bv users of the library. Aliss Baird terminated her duties as pupil teacher in December last, the attendance having fallen below the necessary average to ensure continuance of the appointment. The school opened in Alay, 1916, with a roll number of 67, and in February, 1917. was 76. The attendance for the past year was satisfactory to the end of December. Since February it has not been good, ancl during tlie last month it has been extremely poor, owing presumably to unnecessary alarm on the nart of parents, two cases, of diphtheria being reported in the district. The school was visited by the district health officer, and all sanitary arrangements were inspected. Parents need have no fear for the safety et their children at school, and as the success of the school depends very largely upon the regular attend an :o of the pupils, it is to ue hoped that in the future parents will co-operate with teachers and Committee in tins respect.
