TWO OUTBREAKS YESTERDAY

Fire was discovered” at about 4.30 o’clock yesterday morning in a block of wooden buildings on the corner of Gladstone Road and Cobden Street. The buildings, which contained lour shops, were owned bv Mr. F. Harris and occupied by Mr. Jas. Sealv. grocer, Mrs. Sears (nee Miss Bannister), dressmaker, and Mr. F. Haig, cabi-net-maker. one being unoccupied. The fire was first discovered in the cabi-net-maker’s shop by Constable Gavtley. The brigade was in attendance very quickly, but the flames had spread quickly, and had a good hold on the wooden buildings when tffev arrived. However, the outbreak was soon got in hand. The two centre shops were completely gutted, and Mr Sealv had a large amount of his stock damaged. Mrs*. Sears was very unfortunate, for she lost all her effects at tlie time of the fire in Mr. Burnand’s store about twelve months ago. She was just getting her Ini siness going again, and liad landed a quantity of new stock when vestoiday’s outbreak occurred. Mr Sealv had his stock insured tor £4OO in the Norwich Union office, and Mr Ha to was insured for £IOO in the South British. Mrs. Sears has a cover of £45 in the Norwich office, and Mr. F. Harris lias £4OO in the same office.

BLAZE AT ORMOND. There was an outbreak of fire in Mr. W. J. Baghurst’s grocery shop at Ormond about 5 o’clock yesterday morning, and the shop and billiarclroom were completely destiojeu. Most difficulty was experienced iff saving Messrs Teat and Friar s stoie alongside, and their large iron storeroom was burnt to the ground. Much difficulty was-also experienced in savino- a cottage next door. It is stated that the fire broke out in the bil-liard-room. It was extinguished, but started up again about 5 o clock, when a strong wind set in. and it was soon seen that there was no chance of saving the building. A band or willing helpers removed the roofing from the cottage occupied by Mrs. Benson, sem\. and with a continual stream of water kept the flames down and saved the buildings. Protect yourself against losses by fire by insuring with the Norwich Union Insurance Co. (W. Lissant Clayton, Attorney).—Aclvt.
