MAD AUSTRIAN ASSAULT,

(Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) ROME, Feb. 12.

The Messagero states that the Austrian attacks began in brilliant moonlight at 3 o’clock in the morning on a five kilometre front between San Marco and Santa Caterana. The defenders evacuated the front trenches and in half an hour delivered a massed counter-attack wjtli the bayonet. A majority of the Austrians in the trenches were killed in the furious hand-to-hand fighting lasting till dawn. The Austrians employed picked troops. The Italian losses were comparatively light.

An Italian official report says: W© reached Tarvis Station. We repulsed an attack in the Vadel zone and after violent hand-to-hand fighting the Vadel survivors were captured. We re established our lines east of Gonzia and repulsed the enemy with serious losses. _____
