N EW TRAMWAY CONTRACT

SLEEPERS AT AUCKLAND. A QUESTION-Off SHIPMENT. A question was asked by Cr. Lawless at last night’s meeting of the Borough Council from the Mayor as to when the contract for the tramway extension would be commenced. The Mayor replied that the work would J start when the sleepers • arrived here. 'Cr Lawless went on to say that he understood that the sleepers were at Auckland, and he wanted to know whether the Council would assist the contractor, Mr Webb, in getting them shipped to Gisborne. The Mayor said that he did not think the Council 1 should assist as it was Mr Webb’s business, and Mr Webb had not approached the Council for assistance. Cr. Miller suggested that the Mayor, Crs. Lawless and Miller should be appointed to make similar arrangements to got the sleepers landed here as the Williams-on Opera Company made with the wutcrsjclers’ at Napier and Gisborne, provided Mr Webb deposited an amount sufficient to cover the expense ' attached. Cr. Wildish pointed out that if the sleepers were at Auckland tlie contractor would have an c |mil chance with the Council to get toe sleepers. He added that there v,a v s, no dispute locally. If there were t , dispute the Council could step in then. Cr. Munns considered it- was Mr Webb's business to obtain the sleepers. If lie wanted the Council's help he should have written-direct to the Council. The matter was then dropped.
