WAIAPU COUNTY COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING

(From Our Own Correspondent.) The usual monthly meeting of the above Council was held at Waipiro Bay last Monday, there being present: Messrs K. S. Williams (chairman), Crs. A. B. Williams, It. W. Kemp, J. H. McNeil, E. D. Holt, A. V. S. Reed, C. I. B. Beckett, and Wm. Oates. INCOMING CORRESPONDENCE. From Chief Postmaster, Gisborne, asking the Council, to improve the foot-path and form a side drain past the Post, Office at- Tokomaru Bay, and all buildings on that side of the street. The Postal Department agreed to pay a half-share of any reasonable cost.' It was agreed that the Engince 1 ' should inspect and estimate the cost. From Mr F. J. Williams asking the Council to take steps to ascertain the position of the road near the .south end of the Anaura Bay. It was agreed that a survey of the road should be proceeded with, and steps taken to hav e the new line gazetted. Arising out of a letter received from Messrs Clark Bros., of Te Araroa, the Council instructed the Overseer to endeavor to get the road repaired. From Mr H-. Coventry in reference to dead animals being allowed to remain at the mouth of Waiotu creek, so as to cause a danger to publichealth, and requesting the Council to take some .steps •in the matter to abate the nuisance. Cr. Oates moved and the chairman seconded: ‘ ‘That Mr Coventry be informed that the sanitary inspector has been instructed to attend to the matter, and also to point out that the Council has bo desire to shirk its re-, sponsibilities in such matters'.”—Carried.

From Mr T. G. Buchanan making application for an auctioneer’s license. —The license was duly granted. The report ol ihe Council’s Engineer was received and considered, ancl arising out of the discussion a motion moved by Cr Williams and Cr Kerr.p: That the action of the chairman and Cr. W. Oates in dealing with tenders bo cn in firmed, was carried.

The Under-Secretaiy of Public Works having advised) th« Council that they could proceed with the preparation of plans for the carrying out of the £1 and £1 grants, it was decided to spend pound for pound on the Pahu-Te Pui"a road; To Araroa-Whan-agaparaoa road; and on the bedding of the lhungia bridge; and on the Waipiro-Te Puia road. The overseer’s report was presented and considered, and the overseer was instructed to call for tenders for Pukeamaru road.

The chairman, moved and Or. Oatesseconded : “That the Council prepare the old metal near Arero at the price offered by Mr Eyre, and that he be informed that the Council is not prepared' to do any metalling at Fraser’s cutting. ’ —Carried. The tenders of Mr C. McCracken of Contracts No. 7-15 and No. 9-15 were accepted. Tlie Council granted Mr J. J. Gilmour the use of some timber now lying near the Waiapu bridge on the conditions offered by him. From the Public Works Department inquiring whether the reply sent by them on December 21 in reference to the expenditure of grants met witn the Council's wishes, or whether the expenditure of grants for other works was also in question. Crs Oates and Beckett moved-. “That the Council is still of the-same opinion, and is l prepared to spend any grants that may be entrusted to them and more economically than the Department.’' This was carried. The engineer was instructed to take steps to acquire under the Public Works Act land for a stock paddock near Mokohvi. . . It was resolved that a point in tlie road near Ihunga should be cut away and the road metalled. Th o overseer was appointed tlie Council’s officer to certify to the capabilities of motor car drivers in the County. * . ...
