An opportunity was given to the soldiers "to take farewell of their friends. There were no gathering tears or tremblings of distress. On the contrary, the bolder spirits bore themselves bravely, and openly and unabashed kissed each lady friend who came forward to say goodbye.

At 6.30 the procession swung out- of the Garrison Hall, and, headed by the National Reserve, gaily marched through town to the wharf to the inspiriting strains of the Reserve Band.
