MATAWAI DOG TRIAL.

A SUCCESSFUL MEETING. The Matawai Sheep I)og Trial Club continued its annual trials on Tuesday and Wednesday. On Tuesday, Class 11. (short head), was continued. There was again a good attendance of the public, including a large number of ladies. Amongst those present was the member for the district, Mr W. D l . S. MacDonald. SHORT HEAD. The judge (Mr Powell) made his awards in this class as follows: — First, T. Farr's Bonnie: Head 4, bring back 7, style 5, command 6, yard 4, total 2G; time, lmin 40see. Second. J. Rogers’ Thyme: J—S —4 6 4—25; time, 1.18. Third, E. B. Kingston's Jock: 4 S — 3 —.5 —4 —24; time,l.4o. Fours, E. B. Hingston’s Maid : G —2 —6 5 —i—23; time 1.30. In the evening a pleasant dance was held, there being a large number present. Mrs Ross, of Ngatapa, provided the music. Extra items were contributed by Messrs Murphy, Bain, W. R. Clark, and Cummingham. HUNTAWAY. The trials were concluded on Wednesday, when Class 111. (huntaway) was taken. The attendance was again good, and Mr R. J. Brown kindly provided afternoon-tea, as he had done on the other two days. The judge placed the competitors in the irrmtawav in the following order: First, E. B. Kingston’s Jock Middleton :_ Huntaway 6, style 7, noise o, command 7, total 25; time, 3m in 30sec. Second: J. M. Butter’s Jock: 3—7 —6 —S —24- time, 3.50. Third: T. Farr’s Byron: G —7 — 5 7 23; time, 5.0. The extra event for local competitors, driving through flags and hurdles and yarding, was won by Mr A. Blair’s Boss, 30 points (possible); FKing’s Darkie, 17 points, 2nd; C. Neal’s Flirt, 16 points, 3rd; and E. Brown’s Sharp, 15 points, 4th. THE SPECIAL PRIZES.

The following is the list of special prises: Silver Cup, valued at £4 4s, presented by [Messrs T. J. Adair and CBuscke for best team of three dogs, to score at least lb points in each class, to be won twice in succession or three times at intervals: E. B. Hingston, 76 points', Ist (cup won outright); T Farr’s 74 points, 2nd. Mr J. 13. Clark’s special, value £1 Is, for runner-up for clip: T. Farr. Mr J. J- A. Marshall’s special, value £3~ 3s, for local event: No competitor gained sufficient points (trophy remains with club).

Mr H. J). Lylian’s gold medal for best all-round dog: E. B. Hingston’s Jock Middleton. Mr T. Farr’s trophy, value £1 Is, for dog scoring 'most points in long head only: J. [Rogers’ Thyme. Mr E. Creep’s trophy, value £1 Is. for local dog scoring most points at meeting: 11. J. Brown’s Sharp (33pts). Mr Cyril Buscke’s trophy, value ±.l ss, for dog yarding sheep in fastest time in Class II.: J. B.ogers’ Maid. Time: 1.30.

Mr W. Good’s trophy, value 10s 6d, for youngest competitor: C. Trafford. Messrs Nicholl and Griffiths’ trophy, value 12s 6d, for noisiest huntaway: J. M. Butters’ Jock (full points). Air H. de-Costa's trophy, value 15s 6d, for competitor working his dog with least direction: A. Mcßae. Afr G. K. Pasley’s trophy, value 15s 6d, for dog under best command: E B. ITingstou’s Jock (22 points in 3 Ci cISSGS). Mr G. AVildish’s trophy for oldest competitor: Air C. Neal. Air J. Nasmith’s trophy for dog showing best style of holding in the ring: T. Farr’s Flake. Air D. J. Barry’s trophy, value £2 2s, for, competitor working most dogs at the meeting: E.'B. Hingston. Poverty Bay Herald Co.’s trophy, value £i Is, for dog shewing best style at yarding: T. Farr’s Bonnie. Mr H. Riddick’s special for shephetds’ race,: AV. It. Beaufoy 1, AV. M. Cunningham 2. Messrs Hingston and Farr’s gold medal for special event for local competitors : Mr A. Blair. A smoke concert and presentation or prizes took place on Wednesday night, Mr AA r . M. Cunningham, president of the .club, presiding. There was a lemg programme of toasts and musical items, and the gathering proved a fitting termination to highly-successful trials.
