AN ARTISTIC DISPLAY.

THE SWEET PEA SHOW. ' WOMEN’S PATRIOTIC COMMITTEE SCORE A UNIQUE . SUCCESS.

'flic, annual show of the Gisborne Sweet Pea Society was held at the Scottish Hail yesterday afternoon and evening, and ’ proved ah unqualfied success. Notwithstanding the unfavorable weather, the display of sweet peas was remarkably good and easily five best which has been seen in the district. Mr A. Jackman, of Waimata, canned off the laurels in the sweet pea classes, and his blooms were remarkable for their size and coloring. Mr Jackman carried off the Challenge Cup and also Mr A. J. Cox’s Cup. He also annexed the champion ticket for his vase of Perfection blooms. The blooms were arranged to splendid advantage by that experienced expert, Mr A. Thomson, who was ably assisted by Mr 1). G. Robertson and Miss Third. Added interest was taken in the show owing to tho fact that the Society had decided to hand over the whole of the proceeds to the Women’s Patriotic Committee. -The ladies of the Committee assembled in strong force, and worked really hard throughout the day to make file affair a success. Various stalls were, kept going to tempt tlie nimble shilling from patrons, and the efforts of the ladies in this direction were eminently successful.

A source of delight to the young folks present was the “Apple Tree," which was presided over by Mrs (Dr) Wilson. The apple tree was guarded by an imitation brick wall, and, on payment of a modest 3d, tho children were permitted the delight of scaling the fence by a ladder and picking a golden “apple” off the tree. It is needless to say that Mrs Wilson was kept extremely busy throughout the day. , Another popular stall was the “Doll Stall,” which was presided over by Miss Bernice Blackburn. The idea of this means of raising funds emanated entirely from this young lady, who collected the dolls to stock the stall from sympathisers with the good cause the Committee are engaged in—providing kits for tlie departing soldiers.

The afternoon was extremely warm, and consequently the afternoon tea and ice cream and soft drinks stalls did a thriving trade. The judging was done by Messrs D. G. Robertson and G. T and F. Bull (cut flowers) and Mesdames W. B. Willock and E. H. Mann (decorative).
