INDIAN COOLIES.
ARRIVALS STEADILY INCREASING. [PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.! AUCKLAND. March 10.... Five move Indian coolies from Fiji arrived by the Island steamer Navua this morning to swell the ranks of their fellow countrymen who have already settled in the Dominion, and particularly this part of it. The newcomers were able to satisfy the very meagre -test in English required by the Immigration Act and they are now entitled to all the privileges of colonists who have not been naturalised. Already there is more than a sprinkling of their compatriots in the Auckland district. Hawking fruit and similar commodities seems to be the favorite calling for Indians to adopt. They originally came out to Fiji as workers in the sugar cane plantations, and 1 some of them who apparently prefer work on farms are engaged as farm laborers down the Main Trunk line. At the. present time 24 Indians appear on the books of the Auckland City Council as holding hawkers’ licenses.
