BEHIND THE HANDKERCHIEF.

IMMODEST BATHERS.

COMPLAINTS FROM TAKAPUNA. LPRIBB ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM AUCKLAND, March 10. Serious complaints as to immodest behaviour of Sunday bathers on Milford Beach were made at a meeting of the Takapuna Ratepayers Association last evening, one of the ratepayers strongly urging that the situation now called for more adequate police supervision. The subject cropped up on a suggestion that the Tramway Company should be asked to erect sign posts to guide visitors to the Takapuna beach. Mr Mahony questioned the desirability of taking any steps to attract visitors to tlie vicinity of the Lake. In view of what happened at Milford Beach he thought it was just as well that visitors should go right on to the terminus of the tramway.

“The state of the beach on Sundays is disgraceful,” he continued, “with hundreds of people about bathers lie on the beach and you can seeigrown-up young women lying there almost nude. I strongly believe that a second constable should he appointed on account of the most offensive attitude taken up by bathers of both sexes from morning till night. “If I had a young daughter I would on no account allow her to go down on Milford Beach and see the crowd there,” warmly concluded the speaker. Mr IV. Blomfield' joined in the last speaker’s protest agains the behavior of bathers, but pointed out that the Borough Council was going to put up commodious bathing stations. Speaking of the immodest behavior of young women, Mr Blomfield mentioned an incident when a “young lady” shouted out to her friends: “Who’s going to bold a handkerchief while I undress?” Mr Mahony observed that oven it bathing stations were erected, it would not entirely check the nuisance as most of the offensive behavior complained of took place after bathing.
