GENERAL HUERTA’S DECREE
• To avert .a financial panic, General Huerta (the Mexican dictator) has bad recourse to the expedient of declaring bank holidays until the end of the year, making it optional for banks to pay of not.
In consequence lhe London and Mexico Bank did tat open its doors thh’.s morning, causing a semi-panic (stated the- Mexico City correspondent. of “The Daily Mail” on December 2). At noon the hank opened and immediately the offices were invaded by depositors seeking to withdraw their deposits. The run ,wa.s largely reduced by 2 p.m., but a sentiment of uneasiness prevails in business circles.
The crowd at tbe offices of the London Bank was not very large, but sufficient for police to be'detailed to preserve order. The hank is paying 300 pesos (about £3O) on all cheques over that amount and 33 per cent, on all cheques under 300 pesos. The bank was founded in 1864 with British capital, but for long past lias been controlled by French capital. At the end of tbe month the Government hopes to get money from France.
