CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

MEETING OF COUNCIL. The Council of Che Gisborne Chamber of Commerce held its adjourned monthly meeting yesterday; present— Messrs J. W. Bright (president), Thorne George, J. R. Redstone, W. F. J. Anderson, C. G. Bloore, J. B. Kells, A. M. Foster, S. IS. Dean, W. A. O’Meara, T, G. Lawless, T. Corson. The President referred to the shortage of sheep and cattle trucks in Gisborne and mentioned that enquiries he had made elicited that there were only 20 double-decker sheep trucks and four cattle trucks. This was insufficient, and meant that the number of sheep trucks available was far below the minimum. Very often sheep had to he driven by road on account of the want of trucks. It was unanimously decided to press the Railway Department for more rolling stock in every respect. The Auckland Provincial Industrial Association wrote regarding what was said to be a very important matter in relation to timber “supplies. The point was in regard to timber “shorts.” that was timber of 8 feet and under, for which freight was charged the same as ordinary sawn timber, whereas “shorts” were a byeproduct. The Chamber decided to gather further information on the subject. The Wellington Central Chamber of Commerce advised its establishment and registration. The Department of Agriculture, Industries and Commerce wrote informing the Chamber that as the result of correspondence with the British Government, arrangements had been made for the establishments of more intimate relations between the British Consular Service and the Dominion, so as to assist the. trade and commerce of the Dominion, with foreign countries. One concession will he that any New Zealand firm will be at liberty to apply direct to any of His Majesty’s Consuls for information as. to possibilities of the sale of New Zealand products, the method under which business is conducted and the best means of getting into touch with markets. Firms would be supplied with nnv information required, on application. The following committees were appointed : . . _ Shipping Committee: Messrs hostel-. Corson and Barry.
