AN AUCTION FOR WIVES. The putting up of eligible wives at auction is steadily practised seemingly in the Czar's European dominions. It is in order to supply the Kara Nogal Tartars with wives that the business is carried on. The Kara Nogal steppe is chief market ‘ centre. The market is held every three months In the interval are only isolated sales. The woe of the Nogal Tartars is that they can’t find wives. They have only about one woman to three men. The auctions 'are carried on in what, judged by Tartar standards, is a perfectly orderly and decorous way. The platfoms which the girls mount are circular in shape, “so that there be no angles in matrimony.” The Tartars throng round the girls, examine their faces, pinch them, and make sure that they are fat. More often than not the fathers come a’ong to see fair play, and to make sure of getting their money. Competition is keen and good prices are realised. Sometimes the Tartars hid ponies, paying from three to fifteen for a wife. The ponies mount the platform beside tihe girls, and the merits of> both'aro compared.
