HUIARUA BLOCK TO BE BALLOT-
ED FOB TO-DAY
7436 ACRES TO BE DISPOSED OF
Applications for the Huiarua block, comprising 7436 acres, adjoining the Waipaoa and Tauwhareparae blocks, closed at noon on Saturday. The block, which is about the last Crown land unsettled in the Gisborne Land District, is being offered in five sections, varying from 2746 acres to 943 acres. Ten applications were received tor the grazing run section and 22 for the remaining sections. The ballot will be conducted at the Lands Office at 2.30 this afternoon.
The temperance reformer was justly proud of having converted the biggest drunkard in the little Scottish town, and induced him —ho was the local gravedigger—to get on the olatform and tell his experiences. “My friends,” he said, “I never, never thocht to stand upon this platform with the provost on one side o’ me and the toon clerk on the ither side o’ me. I never thoch to tell ye that for a whole month I haven’t touched a drap of anything. I’ve saved enough to buy me a braw oak coffin wi’ brass handles and brass nails —and if I’m a teetotaller for anither month I’ll he wantin’ it.”
A unique ornithological specimen has been classified by Mr H. W. Hesse, curator, and placed on exhibition at the Wanganui Museum (says the “Chronicle”). It is a weta, the well-known New Zealand tree grub, and its usual distinction lies in tho fact that it has tour wings, which give it much the same appearance as tho locust. The specimen is believed to be the first winged weta found in New Zealand. Mr Howes, a wellknown southern ornithologist, saw the exhibit, a few days ago and was much interested in it.
