TERRORS OF A HEAT WAVE. Intense suffering is reported from Kansas, Oklahoma, and Northern Texas as the result of a heat wave which has now continued for twelve davs, says a New York message, ot Au<nist 16th. At dawn, this .morning the 3 sun brought the temperature above 90 deg,, and later it rose above j'Meg. . . Wells everywhere are drying up, and several mines, unable to obtain water have ceased operations. One mine in the Pittsbury district of Kansas secured a train load of thirty cars of water for the use of employees and their families. In the Seward. County, where no rain has fallen for two months, the few wells which still give water are surrounded by men, women and children, who, travelling from distant farms, have pitched tents around the water-holes. From Kansas Citv scores of wealthy citizens drive nightly in their motorears to the nearest hills, where a breeze is blowing, and there make their beds in the open air. The prisoners of Okmulgee Gaol are being permitted to sleep on the roof. In Nebraska and Missouri, where a temperature of 107 deg. is reported, immense losses of live stock are causing the farmers despair.
