AMERICA IN THE LEAD.
THE DAVIS CUP CONTESTS. ENGLISHMEN DISCONCERTED IN THE DOUBLES. EVEN SCORING IN SINGLES. [UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT] (Received July 27, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, July 27. In the Davis Cup contests Pai'ke beat McLoughlin, 8-10, 7-5. 6-4, 1-6, 7-5. Williams defeated Dixon, 8-6, 3-6, 6-2, 1-6, 7-5. McLoughlin was below tournament form, and made many mistakes in his ground shots, while poor returns were frequent. Parke, with excellent judgment, adopted Wilding’s hack hand return of service. In the first set each won his service until 9-8 in McLbughlin’s favor. Then Parke’s service lost its potency.
The Irishman managed the American’s service well in the second and third sets, but his finding in the fourth were beyond recovery. Ho saved himself in the fifth, which was exciting. McLoughlin squared the games with five all, then Parke won his own service, and then brilliantly captured McLoughlin’s. Dixon’s display was disappointing and uneven. He blundered badly and served 13 double faults
McLoughlin and Hackett defeated Roper-Barrett and Dixon 5—7, 6—l, 2—6, 7—5, 6—4. Hackett’s slow service, contrasting with McLoughlin’s fast one, disconcerted the Englishmen at the opening, but later Dixon’s and Barrett’s tactical experience and regular feeding, and Hackett’s weakness promised the Englishmen victory. Dixon was weak in the second set. but Barrett was brilliant in the third. The Englishmen were within a stroke of winning the fourtli.
McLoughlin was serving with great power, once breaking his racket, bnt he saved brilliantly. There were many long volleying dools.
