-There is every reason to believe that Parliament will

A Lot of Work Ahead of Parliament.

be required this week to settle down to the

consideration of the more important work of the session. So far tlie principal business to be dealt with has been the Address-in-Reply debate, which, it is generally felt, was on this occasion worth the time that was spent in this regard. The tipper House has before it, as is well-known, the measure aiming at the reform of that body, but some days will probably. elapse before the second reading stage is completed. In the House of Representatives quite a number■ of Bills have been brought down—chiefly

measures of a minor character. Wiring on the subject yesterday, however, our Press Gallery reporter said that some of the most important of the Government’s policy Bills are duo to be introduced this week, and, taking everything into consideration, the House is likely to enter upon a busy time. For one thing an Imprest Supply Bill will be introduced, probably early in the week, for Friday next is the first of August, when, in accordance with custom, the salaries of State employees have to be paid. Wednesday next, it seems, is set apart for the consideration ofl private Bills, and Thursday for local Bills, but, should the need arise, the Imprest Bill will take precedence on either of these days or on both. Bills which are ready to be introduced this week include those dealing with State Advances ; Local Bodies Loans; Municipal Corporations and the Public Trust Department. He went on to say that a measure which will break new ground is the annual taxing statute, the Land Tax and Income Tax Bill. Last year this Bill introduced the Government amendments in the Graduated Land Tax system; this year it will embody their proposals in regard to the Graduated Income tax. Then again, another Bill which will make its appearance this week is the consolidation and amendment of the_ Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act. It is, it would seem, a comprehensive measure giving fu.l effect to the Government’s policy in regard to the treatment of industrial disputes, and is expected to advance proposals calculated to meet the case of unregistered as well as of registered trades unions. The Land Bill, which is to give effect to the second instalment of the Government’s land policy is not yet quite ready for presentation, but its preparation is well forward and it will make its appearance at an early date. Amongst other things the Bill will confer the right of acquiring the freehold upon lease in perpetuity tenants of land for settlement leases. From the same source we learn that the Financial Statement will not be brought down this week as was anticipated for the reason that the final revision of. the Statement has been delayed by the indisposition of the Hon. Jas. Allen, who has not yet fully recovered from the effects of his recent vaccination. The Statement is unlikely to -be brought down before Tuesday, August 5 at the earliest, and will probably be delayed until a slightly later date. Under the circumstances, then, Parliament, it will be seen, will have no excuse on the ground of insufficiency of business, ready for transaction, but, in view of the heavy programme ahead, it will require to settle down to real hard work straight away if a bulky new Statute Book is to be produced this rear.
