THE LEAGUE GAME.

By “Lavo.”)

Tlie win of Turanganui over Taruheru last Saturday was a meritorious one, although it came as a surprise to most followers of the game. For once Taruheru tumbled up against a snag, and the fine play of Turanganui came as a revelation. The figlit put up by the town team can be gathered from the fact that the whole of tlie Taruheru crack backs were playing, but although they secured the ball from the scrums flour times out of six, the Blues’ efforts to get going were always frustrated by the smart following up and deadly tackling of Turanganui. The downfall of the champion team has lent an additional interest to the competition, and the next meeting of the teams will be awaited with much interest.

N. Rigby again played a fine game. His two tries were the result of clever play, and he was also responsible for another one being scored.

P. Hickey, who recently ricked his back, made his re-appearance among the Turanganui team, and displayed some of his old form.

J. Stewart also donned the jersey once again for his club, and played creditably.

Hayes was out on his own, and with Hickey and Carrington no doubt considerably helped to win the game.

Feasey played well behind the scrum, getting the ball smartly away to his backs.

A. and B. Morrison again gave good displays for Taruheru, while P. Roderick, J. Roderick, and P. Cate were also seen to advantage. -

The following players will represent the Auckland Rugby League in the Match against Hawke’s Bay to-day Full-back, Mansill;; > three-quarters. Cook, Ifwerson, Asher; five-eighths,

Carlaw, Reko ; half-back, Webb; forwards, H. Hayward, Frickor, M. Hayward, Walters, King, and Mitchell.

Wi Luke, an erstwhile Rugby player, donned the jersey for the Blacks on Saturday. He did yeoman service.

P. Morell gave a splendid account of himself again on Saturday.

I am pleased to see that Poverty Bay has received such duo recognition in tho team to represent Hawke’s Bay against Auckland to-day. In A. and B. Morrison, W. Smith, Carrington and Hayes we have players who have well earned their places in the team, and it may safely bo predicted that they will considerably assist Hawke’s Bay to put up a creditable fight against tho strong combination that has been chosen to represent Auckland.

Hooker played a great game among the forwards for Taruheru on Saturday ,and so did W. Pilcher (up to the time he was hurt), and Grant, and the whole of the others.
