Mr H. H. Ravward, of Wellington, has been appointed to act as ViceConsul for "Argentina at Wellington. A P.A. message from Dargaville announces the death of Mr Robert'Betts Peat, District Manager of Railways on the Kailiu section. Mr W. J. Hill leaves bv the s.s. Maitai this morning: for Auckland, en route for Sydney to extend the business of Heans’ Essence throughout Australasia. Sir Joseph Ward, as already cabled from Australia, will leave Sydney for Auckland by the steamer Niagara on Monday next. He will reach Auckland on Friday next, and will leave for Wellington on the following Sunday evening, thus reaching Wellington on Monday, August 4. Mr W. V. Hobbs, of the Auckland firm of Hobbs. Noble and Co., was in town this week .arranging for the disposal of his firm’s bankrupt stock, it is seven years since Mr Hobbs visited tins district, and lie expressed himself in laudatory terms on the progress of Gisborne and district. The many friends of Sir James Carroll will be pleased to hoar that he lias turned the corner towards health after his long illness. “Whose duty is it to see that noxious needs cut on the road arc destroyed ?” was a question asked by Cr. Wittors at the Cook County Council meeting yesterday. He stated that recently a settler had got his sheep entangled in a lot of cut briars. He had recently received a notice from the Agricultural Department, and tins directed that noxious weeds he cut and destroyed. It was agreed to ask the Department to. enforce its notice.
