A special meeting of the Committee of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was held to-dav to consider a motion brought forward byMr Snowball to rescind the resolution of June 3 to take steps to prosecute those engaged in the practice or piumuton coursing and substitute therefor a resolution “That while the practice of coursing within enclosures should not he encouraged, the committee considers that it is inadvisable for it to institute prosecution against persons who take part in Plumpton epursing, as it recognised) that were it to be%o it could not consistently refrain from instituting similar prosecutions against persons who engage in the sports of angling, deer-stalking, shooting of our Native fauna, etc., and it is obvious that such action would militate seriously against the usefulness of the Society in its legitimate functions.” The first part of the motion (to rescind the previous resolution) was carried and the second part was withdrawn in favor of the following amendment bv Rev. Mr Saunders: “That this co'mmittee, while not prepared to prosecute for cruelty those who take part in Plumpton coursing, expresses its emphatic opinion that such coursing is a heartless and unworthy form of sport, and therefor© hopes to see it speedily abandoned.
