LAND BALLOT.

FOR THE TE ARAI SECTION Tho ballot for the renewable lease of section 2S, block 5, Te Arai Settlement, of 9 acres' 2 roods 23 poles, capital value £509, and half-yearly rental £ll os, was held at the local Lands Office before tho Gisborne Lands Officer (Air T. Brook) yesterday’ afternoon. The improvements which are not inTheimprovements which are not -included in tho price of tho section, but must bo paid for separately, consist of a four-roomed cottage and fencing; total value, £24 7s 6d. The improvements which are included in the capital value of the section consist ui about 20 chains of fencing and some gum trees, valued at £2O. The land is fiat agricultural land of good quality, at an altitude of about 35ft above sea levclj situated on the Pakowai Road about nine miles and three-quarters from Gisborne. The conditions of the lease stated, inter alia:— Term of lease: thirtythroe years, with a perpetual right of renewal for further successive terms of thirty-three years,, and a right to acquire the freehold; rental; 4V per cent, per annum on the capital value, payable in advance on Ist January and Ist July in each year; applicants to be twenty-one years of age and upwards; applicants to furnish with applications statuory declaration, and, on lieing declared successful deposit £1 Is (lease free), and a half-year's rent. Rent for the broken period between date of lease and Ist January or Ist July following is payable. Seven teen applications were received in all, and seven were rejected on account of tho operation of the preference clause. Hie ten who went te tho ballot were as follows: Ainy E. Von Haren, AV. H. Beets, AV.’ G. Beets, AVilliam Black, P. AV. Aluir, Jessie G. Muir, Elizabeth Staples, AValter E. Staples, Patrick Faherty, and E. D. Currie. Air. Thomas Gibson, wbo was appointed scrutineer, drew out tho marble which placed Mrs Jessie G. Aluir ns the successful applicant. A second marble was drawn, in case .a further selection would be necessary, as All’s Aluir wins not present and, strange to say, her husband’s name corresponded with the second marble drawn. U ,
