A petition. objecting to the election of Mr Eustace Lana as representative of the Hastings Borough on the Napier Harbor Board has been lodged at the Magistrate’s Court. The grounds of objection are: (1) Unit Mr Lane ■was not eligible for re-election, inasmuch as his name was not on tlio electoral roll of such district; (2) that the returning officer did not coinplv with the Local Elections and I oils Act 1908, inasmuch as he laded to recount all the voting papers handed • him by the deputy^returuing officers, L and scrutinise the marked rods, bciore declaring the- official results ; _(•>,) that the returning officer, in giving J4ie - public notice required by section / of the Local Elections and Bolls Act, 1908, failed; to appoint a day not more .tlian seven days (exclusive ot the da> of election) before the election _ loi the nomination of candidates; (4) that votes -were counted in favor ot Eustace Lane, such votes being informal,, and the recording of such votes a fit ( ted • the S of the poll. * The ijoj.t.oners •&ay that Mr ..Lane .was ..not duly elected, and that the election is void.
