Regulations for competitive examination for first appointments to commissions in the territorial force are gazetted as follows: —(1) Competitiveexamination for first appointment as second lieutenant in the territorial forces will he held annually in July , (2) Successful candidates at these examinations will ho eligible for first appointments only during the current year in which the examination is held. As vacancies for second lieutenant m several units occur they will bo filled by the candidates next in order of merit at the examination. (3) A candidate who fails to obtain a commission during the year will require to compete again at the examination in tho ensuing year if lie is still desirous of promotion t-o tho rank of second lieutenant. (4) A candidate must be a member of the territorial forces of the milk of corporal or higher, and between the ages of 18 and 25 years, inclusive. A senior cadet who holds tho rank of sergeant in tho senior cadets when ho is posted to the territorial fo«vs shall also he eligible, to compete. (5) Candidates for examination will apply through their Commanding officer, such applications to accompanied by (a) his record of service; (b) medical certificate; (o) certificate h v his commanding officer that the candidate is fitted m every way for promotion to tiie rank of second lieutenant as regards his competency to command, instruct, and train his men. (6) The Syllabus for the examination will he published from_ time to time in general orders and will include military subjects and tests n dictation, English, composition, and arithmetic. The first examination will ho held in July, 1913. ,
