CONVICTS DRIVEN INSANE.
AMERICAN GAOL SCANDAL. OFFICIALS’ BRUTALITY AND IN OOMPETEN CY. [INDEPENDENT PRESS CABLE.] LONDON, April 30. Some amazing disclosures have been made as "the result of,an investigation into the conditions prevailing at the Auburn penitentiary, in New York State. The inquiry revealed brutality, waste, and ineonipotency on tho part of the officials. No fewer than AS..convicts arc declared to have been driven insane druing ono year in consequence of the inhuman treatment to' which they were subjected.
It was further elicited that a. woman who had been sentenced to death was appointed a nurse in the lying-in ward of the gaol.
