APPLICATION FOR AN AWARD
THE DEMANDS
Tlio Gisborne Drivers’ Union intend to apply shortly for an award under the Arbitration Act, and a detailed statement of 'their claims shows that a week’s work shall consist of 471 Jioprs, The daily working AChl's are to he regulated ‘in advance- by each employer according to the special requirements of each trade or business, f so that the ordinary hours cf work shall be made to fall between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. on five days of the week, and 7 a.m. and noon on the day of the weekly half-holiday. The hours shall include time occupied in attendance on horses, cleaning harness, washing vehicles, and booking time. Alt' time worked beyond the hours so regulated shall be considered as overtime. An hour is to be allowed for dinner within five hours of the- starting time. The minimum weekly wages for drivers of one horse shall be £2 14s, for drivers of two horses £2 18s. and 4s per week extra shall be pa-ul for each additional horse, either driven or attended to. In the event of an extra horse being driven intermittently, then the driver shall receive Is extra for each such horse placed m his charge. N o deduction shall bo made from such wages for any cause otliej- than for time lost by the default of the worker. Casual labor shall be paid for at the rate of Is 6d i>er hour. Overtime shall ha paid for at the rate of Is 9d per hour, and shall commence after eight and a-half hours’ work for anv one day. '1 ho above hours shall include the time required for necessary attendance to horses. A man shall be deemed a casual driver who is not employed continuously for more than six dajs. Youths above the age of IS years can he employed according to the following scale:—-From eighteen to nineteen years, £2 per week; and_ from nineteen to twenty years, £2 os pel week ; and after that full wages, unless held to he an under-rate workman. One youth is allowed to each employer employing one fully paid driver, but after that a youth is only al.owed to each additional five fully paid drivers. Youths are net to drive mere than one horse. The usual holidays are applied for. Regarding overtime the rate of pay is Is 6d per hour, and any work done between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. is to be paid for at 2s per hour, with a minimum of 4s. Sundays, Christmas Day, and Good Friday are to be. paid for at the rate of 2s 6d per hour. ' All wages are to be paid week]v. Preference t-r» unionists is a.s'kod for.
